This ride was a bit of an experiment, so this write up is more of a series of notes for future reference.

We did this ride clock-wise and setting out I new well that it would probably be better done the other way round. However, two reasons made me choose this direction. Firstly, I wanted to do Dash Falls as a descent, having done it many times as a climb in the past, but never actually been down it. Secondly, the descent into Mosedale looked to be a fairly undefined track and looked like it might be easier to pick up from above rather than below.

The climb up the side of High Pike is all rideable and also an excellent, fast descent in the opposite direction, so it would be nice to find a way to get to the top of it - part of the reason for trying this route. Reaching the high point, there is then a descent down to the the Lingy Hut bothy, which was pretty good, on well surfaced bridle track.

After the hut, the track becomes less well defined and more boggy. Reaching Grainsgill Beck, we took a left to drop down to Mosedale on rocky and at times overgrown with heather singletrack. Keeping the beck on our right, this track turned out to be quite poor, having to walk some stretches.

Half way down to Mosedale, we crossed the beck of Arm o Grain. At this point, the singletrack improved a lot and was pretty much all good and fun down to Mosedale. Having another look at the satellite imagery, it looks like there is a more direct singletrack to take from Lingy Hut that might cut out the poor section. Definitely worth a look.

The rest of the ride all proved to be correct that we were doing it the wrong way round, apart from the descent of Dash Falls. Both the Mosedale and Fellside sections are pretty good going down, but for us, were an up and dragged a bit.

Next time, try it clockwise and do a hike-a-bike up to Lingy Hut from Mosedale possibly.
