Like the ride we did back in April this year, this one follows some of the many bridleways in Grizedale Forest, although virtually a completely different route, demonstrating how much choice there is to be had in the area.

We started from the village of Hawkshead, the only disadvantage of going from here being the nightmare of finding somewhere to park. A steady bridleway climb got us quickly into the forest, where we picked up the North Face Trail and followed this for a short distance to Moor Top car park. Then came a short, fun singletrack downhill section, before some contouring around on firetrack to reach the first main descent of the day, known as 'Bacon Slicer'. This is typical Grizedale bridleway, rocky, well drained and sketchy, urging you to go faster, but not quite trusting yourself to do so.

Another climb, past the purpose built black route, and a bit more firetrack took us to the next descent, 'Grandad', 'Dad' and 'Dentist'. As the name suggests, it is split into three sections, first being fast and flowing, then becoming loose and technical, before negotiating chain ring bashing rocky sections at the finish. A classic grizedale descent if ever there was one.

Crossing to the east side of the forest at Satterthwaite, we climbed up past Breasty Haw (which we descended last time we were here), followed by another full on downhill. Then came a challenging singletrack climb. We took an incorrect left at the top of this - something that is easily done in forests, where junctions can look a like, particularly Grizedale for some reason.

Back on route, we reached the land rover track, to take the final descent of the day down to Esthwaite Water. We started with this downhill back in April, and this time was just as much fun as before. We enjoyed it so much that we retraced our steps to have a second go, before taking the short road ride back to Hawkshead.
